A dial on the cool glass can tell you the room-facing side of the enclosure while the floor under the warm hide is much hotter. A probe dangling in open air can miss the surface the gecko presses against after eating. A thermostat probe that slips away from the heat source can allow overheating.
Use redundancy for important decisions. Keep at least two digital readings in the enclosure, then spot-check surfaces after equipment changes. If you replace a bulb, move a hide, change substrate depth, or shift the tank to another room, remeasure the setup instead of assuming the old thermostat setting still applies. The goal is not to chase numbers all day; it is to know that the gecko has safe choices.
If your readings disagree, troubleshoot the tools. Check battery age, probe contact, probe location, and whether an infrared thermometer is reading a reflective or wet surface. Cheap tools are useful, but only when you understand what they are actually measuring.
When changing heat equipment, retest from scratch. A stronger bulb, deeper substrate, darker hide, different lid screen, or new room temperature can all change the final result. Keep the gecko out of the tank while you correct a dangerous hot spot.
